About this copy
The story begins in June 1929 on the coast of New Hampshire. Honora Beecher and her new husband, Sexton, a typewriter salesman, move into a dilapidated, renting beachfront house that they absolutely adore. While Honora spends her mornings fixing up the home and gathering washed-up shards of sea glass on the shore, Sexton makes a risky, somewhat deceptive financial gamble to buy the property. When the Wall Street stock market crash hits just months later, the couple is left entirely penniless. Forced by absolute necessity, Sexton takes a grueling, dangerous job at a local textile mill. As inhumane working conditions and pay cuts push the mill workers toward a violent labor strike, Honora and Sexton's fragile marriage begins to fracture under the weight of financial stress, hidden betrayals, and external conflict.
