About this copy
A striking, deeply relatable, and witty contemporary novel exploring the messy dynamics of privilege, race, and good intentions. Alondra "Emira" Tucker is a twenty-five-year-old Black woman trying to figure out her life while working two part-time jobs. Her favorite gig is babysitting Briar, the bright, endearing toddler of Alix Chamberlain. Alix is a successful white lifestyle influencer, blogger, and speaker whose entire brand relies on showing other women how to ask for what they want in life. One late night, while filling in for an emergency babysitting shift, Emira takes Briar to an upscale local grocery store. Seeing a young Black woman with a white child past midnight, a suspicious security guard accuses Emira of kidnapping the girl. A tense, racially charged confrontation erupts, which is caught on video by an onlooker. Though Alix is completely horrified by the incident and vows to make things right, Emira is simply embarrassed and wants the whole situation forgotten. But when the video resurfaces and connects Alix's past with Emira's present in an unexpected way, both women find themselves caught in a complex web of modern intentions, public perception, and private reality. A fast-paced, page-turning, and sharply observant story that explores the complicated realities of being a grown-up, the politics of transactional relationships, and what it truly means to do the right thing.
