Tis a memoir by Frank McCourt

About this copy

Tis picks up right where Angela's Ashes leaves off, following nineteen-year-old Frank McCourt as he arrives in New York City in October 1949. Armed with nothing but infected eyes, rotten teeth, and zero formal higher education, Frank sets out to survive and achieve his version of the American Dream. From working grueling, dead-end jobs on the New York docks and cleaning rooms at the Biltmore Hotel, to being drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Frank experiences the harsh realities, prejudices, and strict hierarchies of the supposedly "classless" United States. Despite the immense hardships, his signature dark humor, sharp wit, and vulnerable spirit remain unbroken. He eventually talks his way into New York University without a high school diploma, paving his eventual path toward becoming a legendary high school creative writing teacher. Written with beautiful Irish cadences, 'Tis is a poignant, harrowing, and frequently hilarious true story about an immigrant finding his voice and identity in a grand, unforgiving new world
